What is a gemstone?

Gemstones are rocks or minerals which can often be used in jewellery. Mostly they are polished and cut so their typical variety of colours, or other characteristics like luster, are best visible. Gemstones are very diverse and therefore gladly used because they can give jewellery a certain mood. Red Rubies will give a ring a different warmer look than a fresh light blue amethyst.

We can divide gemstones in two groups, we have Precious and Semi-Precious gemstones. Precious gemstones have a higher value because of their hardness and rarity. 

Most known Precious gemstones are Diamonds, Rubies, Sapphires and Emeralds. Semi-Precious gemstones exist in all kinds of price ranges thanks to their shape, clarity, colour and so on. The most common Semi-Precious gemstones are Amethyst, aquamarine, Citrine, Garnet, Opal, Pearl, Peridot, Topaz and Tourmaline.
