Like most Victorian jewels, this brooch is very detailed. Queen Victoria was a very influential person and has largely determined fashion during her reign. In the beginning of her reign, she was in love what resulted in floral and romantic jewels like this butterfly. Moreover all jewels were crefted with the greatest eye for detail as you can see on these pictures.
The clasp of this pretty butterfly brooch is an early safety clasp. In fact it’s the first type of safety clasp invented back in 1890. This type of clasp was used until 1910, afterwards they would rather use the newest safety clasps for their precious brooches.
